“White Lotus” Season 1: This Is What Hawaii Really Looks Like Outside the Show

It begins with a body in the ocean and ends with flower garlands at the airport. In between: a week filled with lies, money, loneliness, and the unspoken question of whether luxury actually brings happiness.

In 2021, *The White Lotus* didn’t just change television—it put an entire island on the world map. Maui. Hawaii. A name that might have sounded like a postcard cliché before, but now sounds like something else: the feeling that there’s a story behind every smile at the pool bar.

And if you’re already wondering whether you should go there yourself: Yes. You should. But not necessarily for the hotel.

Why Hawaii? The story behind the first season

The fact that “White Lotus” is set in Maui was no artistic coincidence—it was a stopgap solution. Series creator Mike White received a clear mandate from HBO in 2020: fast, inexpensive, and feasible under pandemic conditions.

White chose Hawaii because the location could be completely isolated. Regular operations at the Four Seasons Resort were suspended for several months in 2020 due to the pandemic—during this time, the film crew used the resort for filming. The cast and crew lived at the hotel throughout the entire shoot. A bubble of luxury, isolation, and human depravity—the premise of the series could hardly have been staged more fittingly.

What began as a stopgap solution became a phenomenon. After the series aired, online searches for flights to Hawaii rose by around 300 percent.

The Hotel: Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea

The centerpiece of the series is real—and available for booking.

The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea* is located in the southwest of the island of Maui in the quiet town of Wailea and spans 15 hectares. On-site amenities include a private museum, the Spago restaurant by Austrian celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck, a spa, two pools, and three golf courses.

How much will it cost you? Rates range from 1,300 euros (double room) to 25,000 euros for the Presidential Suite.

If your budget is more down-to-earth: The Ritz-Carlton Maui Kapalua is a first-class alternative that combines seclusion with elegance—at significantly lower prices than the Four Seasons.

Important to know: Even if you’re not staying at the Four Seasons, you can still visit the resort. The bar and restaurant are open to non-guests—so you can enjoy the same sunset as Tanya McQuoid without spending 1,300 euros a night.

The Filming Locations in Detail

Wailea Beach – the beach from the TV series

The beach right next to the hotel is simply called “White Lotus Beach” in the series—in real life, it’s Wailea Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the entire island of Maui. White sand, turquoise waters, and views of the neighboring islands of Lana’i and Moloka’i. Some of the season’s most dramatic scenes were filmed here.

The beach is open to the public—you don’t need a room at the Four Seasons.

Olowalu Landing – the arrival scene

The guests’ arrival at the resort in the first episode was filmed at Olowalu Landing, a popular beach and surf spot. If you look closely: In the series, the guests are driven “briefly” to the hotel by golf cart – in reality, Olowalu Landing is a 40-minute drive away.

Kahului Airport

An early scene in the first episode was filmed at Kahului Airport—Maui’s main airport. Anyone flying to Maui lands here. An unintended White Lotus vibe included.

Maui Beyond the Series—What You Should Really Experience

White Lotus shows Maui almost exclusively through the lens of a luxury resort. The real island is so much more than that.

Haleakalā National Park

The volcanic crater, at an elevation of 3,055 meters, is one of Hawaii’s most impressive natural spectacles. Sunrise above the clouds, a lunar landscape, absolute silence. Booking your national park admission in advance is absolutely essential—tickets for the sunrise are often sold out weeks in advance.

Road to Hana

One of the world’s most famous coastal roads—85 kilometers, over 600 curves, countless waterfalls, and black-sand beaches. Plan to spend the whole day there and start early, before the tour buses arrive.

The crater lake between Maui and Kaho’olawe is one of the world’s best snorkeling spots—with visibility of up to 50 meters and over 250 species of fish. It’s a tourist attraction that never disappoints.

Practical Travel Tips for Maui

Best Time to Visit

April through June and September through November – less rain than in winter, fewer tourists than in the height of summer. Prices are significantly lower than in December/January.

Getting There

There are no direct flights to Maui (OGG) from Frankfurt (Main). The fastest route is via Los Angeles or San Francisco – total travel time is about 16–18 hours. Round-trip airfare starts at around €900, depending on the season.

Budget Reality

Maui is expensive. Very expensive. Rental cars start at €80/day, restaurants at €25 per main course, and supermarket prices are significantly higher than in Germany. Plan realistically—and book your rental car early, as availability on the island is limited.

Accommodations outside the luxury hotels

Airbnb and vacation rentals in Kihei or Paia are significantly cheaper than the hotel zone in Wailea—and often closer to what Maui is really all about.

White Lotus Season 4 – A Sneak Peek

For those who’ve caught the bug: The crew will return to Europe in 2026 to film the fourth season—this time on the Côte d’Azur. A key filming location will be the glamorous Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez. The renovated hotel is scheduled to reopen in April 2026.

Bottom line: Is Maui worth a visit even without White Lotus?

Absolutely. The series has put Maui on the map—but the island doesn’t need a TV show to justify a visit. It’s beautiful, complex, and so much more than just a luxury resort.

If you’re traveling there and want to see the inside of the Four Seasons: A cocktail at the hotel bar costs around $25. Cheaper than a night’s stay, and you still get the feel of pool bars and sunsets.

But the best part of Maui? It happens outdoors. On the Road to Hana, at sunrise over the volcano, in the water off Molokini. White Lotus doesn’t show you that.

All prices are approximate and may vary depending on season and availability.
